Make your own paper from recycled pulp: safe, simple, and extremely rewarding!

Class Detail

  • Learn the basics of making your own paper! We’ll teach you about the prep, show you the next steps, and the day after the workshop you’ll be able to pick up and take home paper that you made yourself. Tickets are $30 and all supplies will be provided. 

  • The class will include a brief demonstration paired with papermaking history and background information. After the demonstration, students will get hands on instruction on how to make their own sheets of paper

  • Paper will be made from recycled books that have met the end of their lifecycle. Students will be given 12x17 size screens for paper making, producing paper close to a 8.5x11 (letter) size sheet. 

  • Additional items like paint, herbs, plants, glitter, and fun items will be provided to embellish the paper!

This is a family-friendly event open to all age groups.

$30 per person. All material and equipment will be provided.

NOTE: Since the paper will be made from recycled sources, we cannot guarantee that the end-product will be acid-free product or safely biodegradable. Please dispose of your paper into recycling when the time comes.

Instructor Bio

Madison, “Maddy”, Irwin-Hall

Madison, “Maddy”, Irwin-Hall is an architect and preservationist who lives and works in Kansas City. She grew up in midtown, KCMO, attending Academie Lafayette, swimming on the local KC Storm swim team, and reading books from the Westport Branch Public Library and the Reading Reptile. She has a Masters of Architecture from the University of Kansas and a Masters of Science in Historic Preservation from the University of Oregon. When she was 13 years old, she moved overseas to live with her mom in Belgium. Since then she has lived in Washington, D.C., Indonesia, and Australia. She has had the opportunity to travel to more than 30 different countries but is now happily settled in KC with her husband, 4 cats (Milo, Tabitha, Emilia & Baby), and their 100 year old home. 

Mercedes Lucero

Mercedes Lucero is a Senior Writer at Hallmark Cards where they use creative writing to craft everything from greeting cards to social media posts. As a collaborative liaison between the Writing Studio and Global Trends and Innovation Group, they use consumer insights and research to help bring new products and concepts to life. Outside of Hallmark, their poems, short stories, video essays and more can be found in POETRY, New Ohio Review, Puerto del Sol, The Pinch, Heavy Feather Review, and Fourteen Hills among others. They are the winner of the Langston Hughes Creative Writing Award and the author of Stereometry, an interactive book of poetry from Another New Calligraphy. Sara Quenzer

Sara Quenzer is a writer based in Kansas City. She grew up in Redding, California, attended Washington State University, and moved to KC for work. Sara has degrees in journalism and media production and English creative writing, as well as a certificate in editing and publishing. Her published articles and stories can be found on her website saraquenzer.net. She currently lives in KC with her boyfriend and her bunny (both adorable, both devious), and enjoys hiking, d&d, and reading.
